Insight
Achieving Net Zero in Scotland will require a multi-faceted approach including a transition to low carbon and zero emissions transport, including passenger and commercial vehicles, aircraft and maritime vessels. To support this there will be a need to develop new skills and deploy existing skills in new ways across these transport sectors.
Over the past two years we have worked with key public sector agencies to develop an understanding of existing Sottish industry and academic capabilities across supply chains, assess emerging low carbon and zero emission technologies and the opportunities that these could offer, and gather evidence on the skills companies will require to exploit these opportunities.
As a result, we have produced several reports which are now available online:

Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles (cars and vans) Baselining Skills Report (2021)
This report provides a baseline of evidence about skills to support the uptake of Ultra Low Emission Vehicles (ULEVs) in Scotland and the achievement of the Scottish Government objective to remove the need for new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2032.
Heavy Duty Vehicles Skills Baselining Report (2022)
This report presents the results of a study into the skills required to support the uptake of low carbon heavy duty vehicles (HDVs). It is based on research carried out over the period March 2021 to August 2021 including 52 stakeholder interviews and a survey of 44 HDV garages.
Maritime Skills Baselining Report (2023)
This report presents the results of a study into the skills required to support the decarbonisation of maritime operations and to maximise the associated economic opportunities for Scotland. It is based on research carried out over the period November 2022 to January 2023 including 40 stakeholder interviews.
Aviation Skills Baselining Report (2023)
This report presents the results of a study into the skills required to support the decarbonisation of aviation and aerospace sector and to maximise the associated economic opportunities for Scotland. It is based on research carried out over the period November 2022 to February 2023 including 25 stakeholder interviews.
Scottish Enterprise

Decarbonisation of Scottish Maritime Transport (2023)
The overall aim was to assess the capability of industry and research organisations in Scotland to decarbonise maritime transport, within the context of global capabilities and market drivers for maritime decarbonisation.
Synthetic/Sustainable Aviation Fuel Mapping (2023)
Optimat were appointed to undertake an independent assessment to understand the capability/interest of industry and research organisations in Scotland to support the adoption of synthetic/sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), which is seen by many as the first step towards decarbonising Scotland’s aviation sector.
Optimat Case Studies
Some of the above, with more to come soon, are included in our Case Studies section if you would like to know more about how we do what we do.
